This article by the " LA times" is titled A Beach Cleanup: Anaheim Targets Prostitution at Motels Along the Boulevard by Greg Hernandez. I chose this text because for the Genre Analysis assignment in this English class, we had to choose 3 sources: 1 academic, 1 prominent image, and 1of any. This article was originally my academic source because I thought an academic source simply meant it was credible and it was okay for usage in a paper, like a status quo for a research paper. Now that I know it isn't an academic source, I can't use it in the genre analysis assignment, but this article still fresh in my head, which is why I chose it. The topic of this piece is about prostitution in the Anaheim area of Los Angeles and how police were targeting the motels instead of the culprits directly involved in the prostitution act. In the motel's defense, however, they have to make a living and they are patrons of the business. The major opinion the article want you to get out of reading this is that they want to let you know of the situation there and think about it: prostitution is a problem but is it really the motels fault for renting out rooms to them? They have to make money and they don't know who's a prostitute or not at first glance. On top of that, police are forcing them financial burden by enforcing new guidelines, with one including security guards for the motel which cost $3,000 a month. This article doesn't relate to me because I'm not in the Anaheim area, nor am "about that life". However, it does relate to other events that many people are aware of and discuss about through song, notably Kendrick Lamar and his song "Keisha's Song" in his album Section: 80. Here, he talking about a girl named Keisha who was pimped by his father in law and talking about the struggle they go through, but the ugliness and the poverty of the business has hardened her to a point where she feels nothing.
I would say I rarely see of hear about mediums discussing prostitution as other topics, but when I do, its usually in a song/rhyme and poetry. Overall, my opinion of this article is that its good and I like how its set up where each paragraph contains 1 idea and is backed up with quotes, statistics, and reliable information.
Carlo,
ReplyDeleteThis is a well written, thorough, and interesting review. I am also glad that you were able to "recyle" your article from the genre analysis assignment; it's always nice when things work out in the end.
